January 2022 Workshop: Current Standards for the Treatment of Individuals At-Risk for Suicide

Speaker: Shane G. Owens, Ph.D., ABPP, Psychologist and Assistant Director, Campus Mental Health Services, Farmingdale State College (SUNY)

 

Dr. Owens will discuss how current research builds on foundational knowledge regarding suicide prevention. He will focus on current treatment research, lessons learned from individuals with lived experience of suicidal crises, and new epidemiological data that challenge long-standing trends in suicide deaths. Dr. Owens will provide a framework for treating suicidal patients that balances treatment effectiveness with respect for patients’ freedom and dignity. Finally, he will provide case examples end encourage the audience to apply this new knowledge.

Shane Owens is a board-certified behavioral and cognitive psychologist. He is the Assistant Director of Campus Mental Health Services at Farmingdale State College and maintains a private practice in Commack and Rockville Centre. Dr. Owens is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology and a Fellow of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology. He  is a Trustee of the Nassau County Psychological Association, and is a past President of the Suffolk County Psychological Association (SCPA) and the 2014 SCPA Psychologist of the Year. He also previously served as chair of the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) Suicide Prevention Task Force for which he was recognized with a NYSPA Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Owens is frequently invited to provide training to mental health professionals on ethical, effective, and compassionate suicide prevention. He provides supervision and consultation to colleagues dealing with patients at-risk for suicide and has served as an expert witness in cases of completed suicide and homicide-suicide.
